ARTIFACT: LOS ANGELES

Artifact Los Angeles was a multidisciplinary project investigating unpredictability, complexity, and agency within contemporary urban spaces. Comprised of performances and interventions taking place over the course of 18 months, many of the works found their final form within 5 easy steps: a video piece presented on a custom surface. Through animated backlighting, and in using a map of Los Angeles as a physical mediator, the surface tries to describe a space thats in process; continually being redefined by and through the participation and often conflicting trajectories of its members.

Five Easy Steps (Full Video Component)

Five easy steps utilizes footage and images taken during a series of creative social engagements carried out in Los Angeles over a 15 month period. The engagements themselves document an attempt to understand how urban space functions, and chronicle an exploration into the meaning of participation in a space that is continually being made. In situating these encounters in a new context, Five easy steps becomes a poignant narrative unto itself. Through the readings of a classically trained voice talent, a director's suggestions, and elementary level info-graphics, the story draws attention to the complexity of urban space by explaining it in the simplest, and most endearing of terms.
